California offers digital vaccine verification
Digitization of vaccine records intended for convenience
Vaccine verification cards are now available in digital form, which is easier for people to carry and keep safe than the paper version, thanks to California’s new Digital COVID-19 Vaccine Record website from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
The physical verification cards are distributed to individuals at COVID-19 vaccination sites and confirm the date, dose, and medical information for the individual. Now, the CDHP’s site requires users to input only basic information, after which a QR code containing a digital COVID vaccine record is sent via text or email.
The CDPH made it clear, however, that the digital vaccine record is not considered a vaccine ‘passport,’ stating on their FAQs page:
“You are not required to obtain a digital COVID-19 vaccine record. It is an optional means to obtain your COVID-19 vaccine information, and is the digital version of your paper vaccine card. It is one of the options to show proof of vaccination. The State will not be implementing a mandatory passport system in California.”
In short, California residents are not required to use the digital vaccine record and businesses are not required to ask for it. It is simply a convenient alternative to carrying paper inoculation records.
Whatever format a vaccination record is stored in, it is important to keep COVID-19 vaccination, and all health information, safe and accessible. Blue Shield of California encourages our vaccinated members and all Californians to take advantage of this fast, convenient option from the CDHP.
