COVID-19 is taking a toll on physical and mental wellbeing. Here’s how you can help co-workers, employees, and yourself.


The changes brought about by the pandemic have impacted businesses throughout the state, but the impact on employee wellness has been just as profound. In a year bracketed by business closures, shelter-in-place orders, and civic unrest, leaders in every industry are focusing more attention on the mental health of their employees.

At Blue Shield of California, we're guided by our mission to find effective and confidential ways to help our members improve the wellbeing of their workforce. The following tools and resources can help business owners and team leaders support their employees during this most unusual time.

Developing healthy habits for the mind, body, and soul

By now businesses of all sizes are familiar with the dramatic shift to remote work caused by COVID-19. Paired with stress and isolation triggered by the pandemic, reports of negative physical and mental issues have increased.

At Blue Shield of California, we’ve introduced programs and policies to promote holistic wellbeing – or just make life a little easier. Having information or resources available that address mental and physical wellbeing can help co-workers, clients, and you navigate this difficult time.

Self-care techniques like establishing routines, identifying and eliminating stress triggers, and staying connected with others are methods to improve wellness applicable at work and home. Our Healthy Living homepage is a great place to start. Plan permitting, Blue Shield of California members are encouraged to access and use our wellness platform Wellvolution for personalized health recommendations and routines.

From sleep and diet to weight loss and smoking cessation, Wellvolution is one solution for supporting health goals during the pandemic.

An estimated 41% of U.S adults had delayed or avoided urgent or routine medical care because of concerns about COVID-19. We have two virtual services to ensure our members don’t go without care. Teladoc© virtual appointments are available 24/7, with copays and co-insurance fees waived through December 31, 2020.

For minor injuries or chronic conditions, NurseHelp 24/7 SM is ready with registered nurses a phone call away. Health and wellness, already elusive for some, is even more challenged in the shifting landscape of work and the world during COVID-19. Knowing what resources are available can lessen that burden.

No matter how leaders choose to support the mental and emotional health of their employees, it’s important to publicly recognize what a challenge this year has been for them and their loved ones.
